Inspired by the melting ice in Northern Finland, Tapio Wirkkala created Ultima Thule in a deeply remote cottage in Lapland in the 1960s.

The Ultima Thule glass bowls with their distinctive and intricate bottoms, that imitate the ebb and flow of melting ice, can be used to serve for example desserts, nuts and sweets.

This distinctive classic from the 1960s contributed to Iittala's international breakthrough. The patterns gradually change as the glass burns the surface of the wooden moulds.
